Powering the base models of the Corolla is a 1.8-liter getting 139 horsepower that’s mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The SE and XSE models offer a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter that can pair with the CVT or a six-speed manual transmission. All Corolla hatchback models have the larger engine, and there is also a hybrid powertrain that is available only on the sedan body style. Both the gas and hybrid powertrains get incredible fuel mileage.
