Dear Fellow Dealer,

As I have traveled across the country over the last year meeting with dealers, one thing is clear: We are all seeing a real shortage among qualified technicians. This is troublesome because it impacts not only our businesses, but also our customers and our communities.

That’s why I was proud to announce the NADA Foundation’s new Workforce Initiative at the NADA Show in San Francisco last month. Many of you have asked me for more details, so I thought I would fill you in on what the initiative will do in the coming years and what you can do to help us meet our goals.

First Off, the Facts

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the automotive industry requires an average of 76,000 new technicians each year between 2016 and 2026, to fill 46,000 new openings and replace 30,000 retirees in automotive service and maintenance careers. Yet, with 38,829 new technicians graduating from technical schools in 2016, the number of new graduates is not keeping up.

This leaves the industry an annual shortfall of 37,000 technicians per year, which we are working to get ahead of now. We identified several key hindrances in technician education and recruitment that the Workforce Initiative will work to solve:

  • A lack of information online about the benefits of technician careers, location of training programs, and certifications needed to become a technician;
  • A lack of high-quality marketing materials that explain the benefits of technician careers;
  • Very little brand-neutral information about technician careers, as many OEM recruitment initiatives are siloed and ignore each other, which creates confusion online;
  • Virtually no automotive industry presence at “train the trainer” conferences and events;
  • Little actionable demographic research into the technician workforce, and best practices research into the most effective recruitment and retention strategies.

What the NADA Foundation is Doing

Our Workforce Initiative is designed to address these hindrances. Here is what the Foundation plans to undertake in 2019:

New technician website and videos  In early 2019 we launched a comprehensive, engaging, brand-neutral website to promote the benefits of technician careers, with high-quality videos featuring real technicians talking about both the work and the lifestyle the career provides, and provide information about training programs and scholarships regardless of manufacturer. Check it out at and please link to it from your sites.

Digital media  We will develop an online strategy to target prospective technicians with internet search and ultra-targeted advertising on key digital media platforms, including Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. Many OEM training programs—such as Toyota’s T-10 program, GM’s ASEP program and Ford’s Asset program—direct 90 percent of graduates to dealerships but are far from filled to capacity. Our goal is to use our marketing tools to boost enrollment in these programs. 

Marketing materials  We have developed—and will continue to create—high-quality, brand-neutral print marketing materials explaining the benefits of technician careers and the steps necessary to become a technician at different skill levels. These materials can be disseminated to training programs, dealerships, auctions and any interested parties to brand as their own or in partnership with the NADA Foundation. Outreach  We will begin our outreach strategy to exhibit at key “train the trainer” conferences and events, including annual conferences for high school guidance counselors, technical schools and community colleges, military separation officers and other key groups. Workforce Economic Research  We will work with dealerships and OEMs to identify key workforce research needs and develop a plan to help inform industry strategies on technician recruitment, retention and training. 

Technician Career Fairs  We will explore the feasibility of launching an industry-wide effort to promote and host local service technician career fairs in key areas across the country. 

Expand to All Dealership Careers  While we will begin with technicians, please note that the NADA Foundation will eventually broaden the initiative to promote the benefits of all dealership positions—from technicians, to salespeople to managers and beyond.

What You Can Do

Many of you have asked me how you can help. Here are some concrete ways you can support our initiative.

Identify Missing Training Centers Please review our training center map. It includes all ASE-certified technician training programs, but does not include all non-certified or independent programs. If you know of a training program that is not listed, please add the information with the form at the bottom of the page.

Scholarships We are working to compile a comprehensive list of publicly available scholarships available to technicians nationwide. Visit our scholarships page, and if you know of one that is not listed, please scroll to the bottom of the page to add it. 

Use our marketing materials Please feel free to make our marketing materials your own.Download our brochure, add your logo and print copies to hand out at local events or at your stores or offices; and download our web ads to place on your website.

Donate We are just getting started, and the program will expand to areas like research and career fairs if we raise the resources to broaden the initiative. If you like what we’re doing and would like to see more of it, consider donating to the initiative on the website or text DONATE to 202.831.8054. Also, tell your OEM partners about it and encourage them to support, or continue supporting, the initiative.

We will also be working on a dealership action plan with ideas for dealerships to better promote technicians locally. We’ll send that to you later in the year.

The NADA Foundation has pledged nearly $250,000 to the Workforce Initiative and has raised nearly that much from OEM and allied industry sponsors. We seek to raise $1 million for these efforts; contributions are tax-free. The NADA Foundation pledges to cover all administrative expenses of the program.

We firmly believe that a single, industry-wide initiative to promote technician careers—backed by dealers, manufacturers and our partners—will be much stronger than the sum of our non-coordinated initiatives. Situated between OEMs and dealers, and given our non-profit educational status, the NADA Foundation is the entity best positioned within the automotive industry to take on this work.

It’s an exciting time to be a new-car and -truck dealer. And critical to our businesses and communities is making sure we have the best workforce available for our industry. I’ll keep you updated as we move this iniatiative forward.
