Over 2 Million Toyotas Were Built in North America Last Year

Support the local economy by choosing a Toyota vehicle over a model from another brand name. Throughout the years, Toyota has shown true dedication to boosting the American economy and providing jobs to thousands of workers. As the result of these efforts, over 2 million Toyotas were built in North America in just 2015.

The Record

2015 was the first year that Toyota built over 2 million vehicles in North America. Specifically, the automaker produced 2,035,028 vehicles along with 1,933,702 engines. Toyota was able to increase its production to reach these numbers thanks to a better economy, low fuel prices, and the strong customer interest in specific models, like the Tacoma, Camry, Corolla, and Rav4.

Other Production Milestones in 2015

Many Toyota manufacturing sites saw their own milestones. The Kentucky plant, for example, produced the very first Lexus that was built in the U.S. This was the result of an investment of $360 million, with the ES 350 generating 750 new jobs and boosting the local economy. The all-new Tacoma began production in San Antonio, Texas, and Indiana manufacturing facilities produced their 4 millionth vehicle.

In Alabama, the production of V6 engines was increased and the 4 millionth engine was built. Meanwhile, the Mississippi plant built its 500,000th Corolla. The North American milestones even extended into Mexico, where the Baja California full assembly plant started three shift operations because of the high demand for the all-new Tacoma.

Future Plans

Toyota has big plans for future North American manufacturing as well. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the plant in Cambridge, Ontario; the 30th anniversary in Kentucky; the 20th in Indiana and West Virginia; the 15th in Alabama; and the 5th in Mississippi. In addition, groundbreaking will take place in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato, for the 15th Toyota state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. This plant should start producing Corollas in 2019.
